St. Lucia Paradise: Pigeon Island, Caribbean Curry & Why We Returned for a Week
Discovering This Lush Caribbean Gem During Our Cruise Stop
Hey guys! Today we're taking you along on our incredible St. Lucia adventure in this stunning Caribbean paradise. As a family that's explored 146 countries together, we love those spontaneous discoveries that make us fall head over heels for a destination and St. Lucia did exactly that from the moment we stepped off the cruise ship!
Our St. Lucia Day: From Castries Port to Pigeon Island Paradise
We started our adventure right at Castries port, St. Lucia's vibrant capital city, where we were greeted by the most gorgeous rainbow stretching across the sky. Talk about a warm Caribbean welcome! After sorting out our internet connection (pro tip: local SIM cards are way cheaper than cruise ship data), we headed straight for our main destination: the historic Pigeon Island National Park.
Pigeon Island National Park: Where History Meets Natural Beauty
This incredible location blew us away with its perfect combination of fascinating military history and breathtaking natural beauty. Here's what makes Pigeon Island so special: it used to actually be an island! They filled in the water to create a land bridge connecting it to the mainland, transforming this strategic military outpost into an easily accessible national park.
The 18th-century ruins scattered throughout the park tell the story of fierce battles between the British and French colonial powers. Walking among these historic fortress structures hidden in lush vegetation, you can almost feel the weight of history beneath your feet.
The Challenging Hike to Paradise Views
The hike to Pigeon Island's highest viewpoint is definitely not for the faint of heart! We're talking steep, rocky terrain that had me swapping to proper running shoes halfway up. But trust me when I say the effort is absolutely worth every challenging step.
From the summit, you're rewarded with: 🌅 360 degree panoramic views of the entire island 🏝️ Distant views of Martinique (only 20 miles away!) 🌊 Stunning coastal perspectives showcasing St. Lucia's diverse landscape 📸 Perfect photo opportunities for those Instagram-worthy shots
The climb takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your fitness level, with several rest spots along the way to catch your breath and admire the increasingly spectacular views.

Beachfront Dining & The Best Caribbean Curry Ever
After our challenging hike, we treated ourselves to lunch at one of Pigeon Island's beachfront restaurants. The setting couldn't have been more perfect: dining with our toes practically in the sand while enjoying stunning ocean views and feeling that gentle Caribbean breeze.
The food scene in St. Lucia absolutely blew us away! The vegetable lasagna came with an amazing cheese blend that reminded us of fondue, but the real star was the authentic Caribbean curry. Honestly, it was the best curry we've had since our time in India! The blend of spices and cooking techniques showcased the beautiful fusion of cultures that makes Caribbean cuisine so incredibly special.

Local Life & Island Culture
One of our favorite parts of any destination is connecting with locals, and St. Lucia's warm, welcoming culture really shone through. From the sweet immigration officer who took time to chat with us about our travels and give Julia her passport stamp, to the local vendors who explained the island's unique pricing and currency system, everyone was genuinely proud to share their beautiful island home.
The blend of English and French languages you hear throughout the island reflects that fascinating colonial history, and it creates this unique cultural atmosphere that feels both familiar and exotic at the same time.
