Our Epic Journey to South America’s Hidden Gem Suriname

Hey guys! We just completed an incredible adventure to Suriname country number 113 on our family journey! This South American hidden gem absolutely blew our minds, and I can't wait to share everything we discovered during our time in this culturally diverse nation.

Getting to Suriname: The 3 AM Adventure Begins

Our Suriname adventure started bright and early at 3 AM in Georgetown, Guyana. After taking a shuttle to the border, we faced our first challenge crossing the Corentyne River by ferry. This 30-minute ferry ride costs about 9,000 Guyanese dollars per person (locals confirmed this is the standard rate), and here's the catch it only runs once a day! Miss it, and you're stuck until tomorrow.

The ferry crossing itself was quite an experience. We met some lovely fellow travelers from Switzerland and enjoyed the scenic river views, though our local friend warned us about piranhas in the water - definitely not somewhere you'd want to take an unexpected swim!

Paramaribo: A City That Looks Like New Orleans

After a long 14-hour journey (including some bus drama with seating arrangements), we finally arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname's stunning capital city. The first thing that struck us was the incredible Dutch colonial architecture it literally looks like you've been transported to New Orleans with those gorgeous balconies!

Where We Stayed: Max Garden and Pool

We stayed at the amazing Max Garden and Pool right in the heart of Paramaribo. This beautiful accommodation exceeded our expectations with:

  • Spacious apartment-style rooms with comfortable beds for the whole family
  • A gorgeous gourmet kitchen
  • Multiple seating areas and a lovely gazebo with barbecue facilities
  • Most importantly that refreshing pool we desperately needed in the hot, humid weather!
  • Perfect location within walking distance of supermarkets and local food stalls

The property has units scattered throughout the area, making it feel like a little community.

The Cultural Melting Pot That Will Amaze You The Fascinating History of the Maroons

One of the most incredible discoveries during our visit was learning about the Maroons African slaves who escaped into Suriname's vast rainforest and successfully resisted Dutch colonial control. What makes their story so remarkable is that these communities still exist today, maintaining their original:

  • Tribal languages from West Africa
  • Traditional customs and rituals
  • Cultural practices and food traditions
  • Village lifestyle deep in the jungle

Some Maroon communities are located 600 kilometers away from the coast, and many residents still only speak their ancestral languages. It's a powerful testament to cultural preservation and resistance.

A True Cultural Melting Pot

Suriname's diversity is absolutely mind-blowing. In this small South American country, you'll find:

  • Afro-Surinamese descendants from West Africa
  • Indonesian communities (we had the most amazing Indonesian food!)
  • Chinese restaurants and cultural influences
  • Indian populations brought as indentured servants
  • Javanese communities
  • Native indigenous groups
  • Dutch/European colonial influences

Walking through Paramaribo, you can literally see a mosque standing right next to a synagogue a perfect symbol of this country's incredible religious and cultural tolerance.

What Shocked Us Most About Suriname The Credit Card Situation

Here's something crucial for travelers: almost nowhere in Suriname accepts international credit cards! We're talking about major chains like Pizza Hut and KFC - they only accept local Surinamese interact cards or Maestro cards. Even the ATMs were problematic, with many machines down or only accepting specific card types.

Travel Tip: Bring plenty of cash or ensure you have a Maestro card that works internationally!

The Climate Reality

Don't let the November timing fool you Suriname is HOT and HUMID year-round! Located just a couple of degrees north of the equator, you'll need:

  • Lots of water
  • Strong sunscreen
  • A hat and umbrella
  • Light, breathable clothing

90% Rainforest Coverage

Here's a mind-blowing fact: 90% of Suriname is covered in pristine rainforest! This means if you venture outside the main cities, you could literally get lost forever in untouched wilderness. It's home to countless undiscovered communities and represents one of the world's most intact rainforest ecosystems.

Exploring Paramaribo: Must-See Attractions

Fort Zeelandia: A Window into Colonial History

Fort Zeelandia offers fascinating insights into Suriname's colonial past. The country was first colonized by Spain, then by the Dutch in 1657, which explains why Dutch remains the national language today. Suriname only gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975 relatively recently in historical terms!

The fort closes early, so make sure to visit in the morning. Plan about an hour to see everything properly.

The Historic City Center

Paramaribo's city center is surprisingly walkable and compact.

Highlights include:

  • Independence Square with its beautiful colonial buildings
  • The historic shopping district with narrow alleyways and local shops
  • The riverside area where you can see a World War II shipwreck still visible in the water
  • Local markets selling unique fruits, vegetables, and products you won't find anywhere else

Religious Harmony in Action

One of the most striking sights in Paramaribo is seeing a mosque and synagogue standing peacefully side by side a beautiful representation of Suriname's religious tolerance and diversity.

The Food Scene: A Delicious Cultural Journey

Suriname's food scene reflects its incredible cultural diversity:

Indonesian Influences

We enjoyed amazing Indonesian cuisine including:

  • Delicious soups with rich, complex flavors
  • Chicken satay with perfect seasoning
  • Rice and noodle dishes with authentic spices

Local Specialties

  • Unique tropical fruits growing right in our accommodation's garden
  • Sugar cane that locals chew like natural candy
  • Spicy peppers that will definitely test your heat tolerance!

Street Food Culture

The abundance of food trucks and local stalls means you can eat well and affordably throughout the city.

Practical Travel Information Language

  • Official language: Dutch
  • Widely spoken: English, various indigenous languages
