St. Thomas Walking Tour: 99 Steps, Danish History & Local Life

Discovering Charlotte Amalie During Our Caribbean Cruise Stop

Hey guys! Today we're taking you along on our authentic St Thomas walking tour of Charlotte Amalie in the US Virgin Islands. As a family that's explored 146 countries together, we love those early morning adventures that let us experience destinations like locals rather than typical tourists.

Our St Thomas Walking Tour: Early Morning Island Adventure

We started our day bright and early at 6:40 AM - you know how we love making the most of every cruise port! After a quick breakfast on the ship, we were ready to explore this beautiful Caribbean island that's been shaped by centuries of fascinating history.

The Famous 99 Steps (Spoiler: There Are Actually 102!)

One of St. Thomas's most iconic attractions had to be our first stop - the famous 99 Steps. Here's a fun fact that surprised us: there are actually 102 steps! These Danish-built stone stairs have been welcoming visitors up the hillside for centuries, offering incredible views of Charlotte Amalie harbor below.

The climb is definitely worth it, especially when you reach the top and can see Blackbeard's Castle. The girls loved the challenge, and we all appreciated the stunning panoramic views that reward your effort.

Historic Lutheran Evangelical Church: A 355-Year-Old Treasure

Walking through Charlotte Amalie's charming streets, we discovered the historic Lutheran Evangelical Church, built way back in 1671. Can you imagine? This beautiful building has been standing for 355 years!

Inside, we learned fascinating details about the Protestant Reformation and how Danish colonial influence shaped this island's religious and cultural landscape. It's moments like these that remind us why we love combining travel with education - our girls are getting history lessons you simply can't find in textbooks.

St. Thomas Fun Facts That Will Surprise You! 🤯

🏰 Charlotte Amalie was named after the Queen of Denmark - not a local Caribbean queen like many people assume!

🇩🇰 Denmark ruled St. Thomas for over 250 years until the US bought the Virgin Islands in 1917 for $25 million

📊 The famous "99 Steps" actually has 102 steps - we counted them ourselves and can confirm the name is misleading!

💎 St. Thomas is a duty-free shopping paradise because of its unique tax status - that's why there are jewelry stores on every corner

🏴‍☠️ Blackbeard's Castle sits at the top of those historic steps - yes, the actual pirate Blackbeard used this as a lookout point

⛪ The Lutheran Church we visited is 355 years old and still holds services today

🛍️ That $9 chocolate bar wasn't a tourist trap - island pricing means everything gets shipped in, making groceries expensive for locals too

🚢 Over 2 million cruise passengers visit St. Thomas annually - making it one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean

Walking these historic streets, you can feel the layers of history beneath your feet. The architecture, the layout of the town, even the famous steps we climbed - all testament to this fascinating Danish colonial heritage that shaped the island until 1917.

Duty-Free Shopping Paradise

We quickly discovered why St. Thomas is famous as a duty-free shopping destination! The streets are lined with jewelry stores, and we met some incredible locals who explained why this island has become such a popular spot for tax-free purchases, especially jewelry.

The girls found some great tank tops, and we enjoyed coffee with a view while soaking in the bustling atmosphere of this Caribbean shopping hub.

Local Life & Island Culture

One of our favorite parts of any destination is connecting with locals, and St. Thomas didn't disappoint. The friendly island culture really shone through in our interactions with residents who were happy to share stories about their home.

We also got a reality check on island life pricing when we spotted $9 for just 90 grams of chocolate! It's a good reminder that island living comes with unique economic challenges.

Wildlife Encounters

Before heading back to our cruise ship, we had an unexpected wildlife encounter - massive iguanas lounging near the port! These impressive creatures seemed completely unbothered by the cruise ship activity, giving us a perfect photo opportunity.
